Founded in 1954 AR had a novel way of building speakers. Until then,
speakers of quality had to be rather large. By using a sealed cabinet they were able to
make less-expensive, bookshelf-size speakers. The air cavity behind the speaker
cone acted as a spring to help damp woofer motion. The AR-1 was the first
commercial acoustic suspension loudspeaker. Older Acoustic Research
loudspeakers can sound better then many modern day high-end systems. We have seen
nice vintage AR speakers sell for over 1k. It is sad to think that many of
these gems have gone into the trash simply because the owners did not know that
you can replace the foam surrounds on the woofers. If you have a set of AR
speakers that need to be re-foamed you should definitely consider either using our speaker repair kits to repair them or having us repair the speakers for
